1. General information

The main objective of the subject is to analyse and learn about the new aesthetic and artistic concepts developed by postmodernism and how they influence design. In addition to addressing the new concepts that are handled from mid-twentieth century and configure a new way of understanding the role of design in society. All this contextualized in the social, technological and visual processes of the late twentieth century and the first decades of the twenty-first century.

An additional objective of this elective is to make students aware of the importance of product design in the achievement of the SDGs (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/). To this end, we will work with two: No. 5 (gender equality) and No. 11 (Sustainable cities and communities).

2. Learning results

  • To remember the new aesthetic and artistic concepts of postmodernity.
  • To apply the new aesthetic and artistic concepts of postmodernism to the field of product design.
  • To understand the concepts of the discipline developed in the postmodern period.
  • To evaluate the importance of the most outstanding designers of the postmodern period and of the present time
  • To analyse the design currents that emerge under the protection of the new social theories.
  • To analyse the influence of new technologies in the field of current design.
  • To use and handle bibliographic and visual sources in a consistent manner for subsequent application.

3. Syllabus

Part one: Aesthetics of industrial design 

Design and visual culture.

Design and communication.

Second part: The history of industrial design

Consuming modernity: design between the 1940s-1960s. 

The crisis of the 1970s and the triumph of Postmodernism in the 1980s. 

Design trends at the end of the 20th century. 

Design in Spain from 1950 to the present day

4. Academic activities

Lectures 45 h.

Oral expositions based on the presentation of contents by the teacher.

Problem solving: 15 h.

Analysis of diverse material related to the practical part of the subject.

Special practices: 10 h.

Two training trips. One takes place in the city of Zaragoza and the other one in a Spanish city with exhibitions of design at the time of teaching.

Carrying out application or basic research work: 33 h.

Development of the various evaluable practices proposed throughout the semester.

Tutorials: 2 h. per student

Study and personal work of the students: 45 h.

5. Assessment system

The continuous evaluation system is chosen.

The tests to be performed will be:

Individual work (semantic analysis of several objects): 25 %

Individual work (critique workshop): 25 %

Group or individual work (presentation and summary): 50 %

General evaluation criteria: the understanding of concepts and knowledge; the order, correct structuring, coherence and precision in the exposition; the capacity of analysis and synthesis; the capacity to apply theoretical knowledge; mastery of specific vocabulary; presentation and formal correctness.

Global evaluation test: 100 % of the final grade

In case the student has not passed the continuous evaluation, they will have to take the same tests as for the continuous evaluation and hand them in on the day of the exam

1. Información básica de la asignatura

La asignatura tiene como objetivo principal analizar y conocer los nuevos conceptos estéticos y artísticos que desarrolla la posmodernidad y como los mismos influyen en el diseño. Además de abordar los nuevos conceptos que se manejan desde mediados del siglo XX y configuran una nueva manera de entender la función del diseño en la sociedad. Todo ello contextualizado en los procesos sociales, tecnológicos y visuales propios de finales del sigllo XX y primeras décadas del XXI. Un objetivo adicional de esta esta asignatura optativa es concienciar al alumnado en la importancia que tiene el diseño de producto en la consecución de los ODS (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/). Para ello, se trabajará con dos: el nº 5 (igual de género) y el nº 11 (Ciudades y comunidades sostenibles).

2. Resultados de aprendizaje

  • Recordar los nuevos conceptos estéticos y artísticos propios de la posmodernidad.
  • Aplicar los nuevos conceptos estéticos y artísticos de la posmodernidad al ámbito del diseño de producto.
  • Comprender los conceptos propios de la disciplina desarrollados en el periodo de la posmodernidad.
  • Evaluar la importancia de los diseñadores y las diseñadoras más destacados de la posmodernidad y del momento actual.
  • Analizar las corrientes de diseño que surgen al amparo de las nuevas teorías sociales.
  • Analizar la influencia de las nuevas tecnologías en el ámbito del diseño actual.
  • Emplear y manejar las fuentes bibliográficas y visuales de manera coherente para su posterior aplicación.

3. Programa de la asignatura

Primera parte: Estética del diseño industrial  

Diseño y cultura visual.

Diseño y comunicación.

Segunda parte: La historia del diseño industrial

Consumir la modernidad: el diseño entre las décadas de 1940-1960.  

La crisis de los 70 y el triunfo de la Posmodernidad en los 80.  

Las tendencias del diseño en el final del siglo XX.  

El diseño en España desde 1950 hasta nuestros días

4. Actividades académicas

Clase magistral: 45 h.

Exposiciones orales basadas en la exposición de contenidos por parte del profesor.

Resolución de problemas: 15 h.

Análisis de diverso material relacionado con la parte práctica de la asignatura.

Prácticas especiales: 10 h.

Dos viajes formativos. Uno se desarrolla en la ciudad de Zaragoza y el otro en una ciudad española con exposiciones de diseño en el momento de la docencia.

Realización de trabajos de aplicación o de investigación básica: 33 h.

Desarrollo de las diversas prácticas evaluables que se proponen a lo largo del semestre.

Tutela del alumnado: 2 h. por alumno

Estudio y trabajo personal del alumnado: 45 h.

5. Sistema de evaluación

Se opta por el sistema de evaluación continua. 

Las pruebas a realizar serán:

Trabajo individual (análisis semántico de varios objetos): 25 %

Trabajo individual (taller de crítica): 25 %

Trabajo dirigido en grupo o individual (exposición y resumen): 50 %

Criterios generales de evaluación: se valorará la comprensión de conceptos y conocimientos; el orden, correcta estructuración, coherencia y precisión en la exposición; la capacidad de análisis y de síntesis; la capacidad de aplicar conocimientos teóricos; el dominio del vocabulario específico; la presentación y corrección formal.

Prueba de evaluación global: 100 % de la calificación final

En caso de que el alumno no haya superado la evaluación continua, tendrá que realizar las mismas pruebas que para la evaluación continua y entregarlas el día del examen.
